GPS Advanced Algebra ( week of 8/11/14)

Tutoring: Tuesday afternoon and Friday morning

Assessments: Unit test is  next Wednesday and Quiz is Monday ( 8/11)

Monday
Today, you will take a quiz on matrices with a focus on adding, subtracting, multiplying with scalar and equal matrices. I think all of you will make an A on this quiz :)). Afterwards, you will work on the Ice Cream Task, a discovery activity to multiplying matrices.

Tuesday
Today, you finish the Ice Cream Task and get ready to be creative as you will display all of the task components on a poster. Also, we will begin to learn how to multiply matrices by looking at the tasks. The operation of multiplying matrices is more advanced than scalar multiplication.

Wednesday
We are halfway through the week :)). We continue with matrix multiplication with a look at the commutative properties of matrix multiplication. I will create a problem for you to solve and to make the decision  on the commutative properties. Practice is the key for matrix multiplication. Class starts with combo cards for matrix operations.  I will allow you to work with a partner on the problems. Also we start on the 2 by 2 determinants, a basic formula to use.

Thursday
We learn how to calculate 3 by 3 determinants and how to find the area of a triangle using a 3 by 3 determinant. I will use colored pencils in class today and I will have a set for you in class.

HW: none

Friday
Tday, we explore the identiy and inverse functions and how to find the inverse of a 2X2 matrix. Also, you learn how to set up a system of equations using matrices.
